Too precious to waste

There are just not enough hours in a day.”

How many times have you heard someone say this? Maybe you have said it yourself? Probably too many times to count. I am guilty of saying it as well. The truth is, time is committed to moving forward whether we do or not. What if, instead of complaining about how "little" time we have, we viewed time as invaluable and precious and started spending it ever more wisely. An average human lives to be seventy-nine years old. Someone did the math and concluded that this would be 948 months, 28,835 days, 692,040 hours, 41,522,400 minutes and 2,491,344,000 seconds. This time is quickly spent and passes without stopping. How do we spend this time? The following graph by Bureau of Labor Statistics illustrates how the average American spends their time.

If you calculate that, we spend approximately 26 years of our life sound asleep! And we spend approximately 27 years working. Together that is 53 years of our life. Time is the most valuable, most abundant, and most frequently spent currency. No other currency can buy it or match it's power to change lives and surprise people. This invisible currency is yours to disburse. The choice on how it is expended is ours. Tony Morgan, a British computer scientist, said, “You get to decide where your time goes. You can either spend it moving forward, or you can spend it putting out fires. You decide. And if you don't decide, others will decide for you.” As a young person, I know it is especially difficult to make the choice to spend time wisely. Much of our time is spent pleasing ourselves. And when the slightest thing goes wrong, we waste our time through anger, displaying it for those around us to see. What do we expect when we waste it all on our selfish desires and ambitions? How foolish we must seem in the sight of God. The One who created time, watches as we waste it selfishly. When you stand before God, what will you have to show for the time given to you? God forbid that you or I will say at the end, “I have wasted my time.’’  John Piper remarked, "It is better to lose your life than to waste it." So, what will it be? How will you spend your time from this moment forward? It is not impossible to change. Start spending your time wisely. Do not waste it. "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of."
